With the new show Riverdale becoming a television hit, fans who are not familiar with Comic land are surprised the series is based on a Comic book.

If we phase back to the days of milkshakes and ponytails, Archie was a different concept from the ever-popular Superman of that time period. The series was fresh and fun with a touch of taboo across the pages. A day in the life of a teenager brought readers along for the up and down ride. To sweeten the deal, Archie’s friends completed the group with their own diverse personalities. High School in any era is never a walk in the park. Relationships, crushes and teenage angst are paired with the excitement each new day brought to the Archie gang. Plans for the weekend were summed up with whatever twists the authors had in store for us. Archie was known for bright red-orange hair and an apple pie attitude. The creators of Archie wanted to stay away from the stereotypes of the greasers or rebels known for the times. This shows in the characters development throughout the long running Comic series.

Archie and His Friends

We have already met Archie Andrews, the good guy who always has a heart of gold. He is the all-around nice guy who never gives up hope. His dreams of music and a can-do attitude has gotten Archie out of some tough spots. Admittedly, it wouldn’t be Archie if it wasn’t for his best friend Jughead. While he always wears his oversized good luck charm on his head, he also carries an enormous appetite. In most scenarios of the storyline, Jughead is either eating, wanting to eat or just ate. He holds an aloof appearance of not caring, however he is smarter then he lets on. It seems as if all of his arrogance went straight to Reggie. Reggie is the non-friend friend. He is generally a prankster who also feels he is a total catch. While he and Archie are usually at opposite ends of the spectrum, they are still High school mates. Most of their animosity is revealed through who they are dating. This leads us to the famous Archie duo Betty and Veronica. A long running plot is the on again, off again crushes among the triangle. Raven haired Veronica is smart and ridiculously rich. Her high fashion status allows her to pull the strings as she sees fit. Despite her wealth and Archie’s contrasting lack of, Veronica continues to crush on her red headed friend. She has a kind heart when you look past the glare of her bling. Betty is the blonde and bubbly girl next door. She has the looks, the smarts with the right amount of dizziness to stay true to clichés. As an aspiring writer, she is often noted as sharing her day in her diary. Her continuous and full of mischief rivalry with Veronica for Archie’s affections does not to seem effect their friendship.

Archie and His Friends

There are many more supporting characters that live in Archie’s world. A few even gained a sphere of their own such as JoJo and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. If you haven’t wandered to check out Archie and his gang lately, its time for a visit. You will find the original and the revamped versions are still popular today.
